Wood/Soda Firing:
Our wood kiln is heated solely by firewood and reaches a temperature of about 2300⁰ F. As we approach the end of the firing we introduce a mixture of baking soda and sawdust into the firebox. The soda vaporizes and flows through the kiln forming a thin glaze on the pots as it moves through the kiln. This “soda glaze” is always unique and affects each pot differently based on its location in the kiln, the type of clay it is made from and the slip it is decorated with. Each pot is marked by the pattern of the flame and the surfaces are dappled by flyash which sticks to the white hot clay.
All our wood fired pottery is glazed on the interior making it functional and food safe even if the exterior has a matte surface.
